Cayo Costa to Salty Sam’s Marina

As Wendy and our son slept in a little, I got up in time to watch a wonderful sunrise. I sat on the bow with a cup of coffee listening to The Joshua Tree album. It was a great way to start the day.

Once we were up and moving, we took the dinghy over to the shore to check out the Cayo Costa state park. We tied up the dinghy, paid our honor entrance fee ($2 per person), and decided to take a nice walk through the island with the hopes of seeing some interesting flora and fauna.

Unfortunately, the mosquitos were out in force and made the walk a little less comfortable than we would have liked. The walk was nice, though. We passed the old grave yard and saw all sorts of plants and trees. One tree had flowered and dropped thousands of tiny white flowers. It was incredibly fragrant. For critters, we didn’t see much… just bugs, a few lizards, two squirrels, and two snakes.

After a quick stop at the store, we headed back to the boat, got our swimsuits, and spend an hour or so swimming and sunning on the sand spit near our boat.

We pulled the anchor at 1300 on a rising tide for the trip to Salty Sam’s Marina near Ft. Myers Beach. We wanted to get there with plenty of time before dark, so we decided to head out into the Gulf and throttle up for a chunk of the 41 mile trip.

The Gulf was behaving nicely. With one foot chop and a SW wind, Our Dash felt very smooth up on plane. The traffic was very busy as we entered the channel and we saw a police boat pull over someone (no, not us).

The folks at Salty Sam’s were very helpful and friendly. We had a clean docking with helpful hands on the dock. After washing down the boat and checked in.

Lo and behold… there was Packer Bar! Parrot Key Caribbean Grill was opened by a couple of Packer fans. The outside bar was all decked out in Packer paraphernalia with Green and Gold clad people packed in like Lambeau Field to watch the Packers play the Ravens. We settled in with our new friends to eat, drink, and cheer for the Packers. They won thanks to our support.
