Carpe Diem: We Are Not Guaranteed a Donut Sundae

It’s Loop Eve. We are heading out at the crap of dawn tomorrow. We sold our car today, and before that we provisioned the heck out of the galley. We can go without a lot of things, but we will not be without Diet Dr. Pepper or coffee for Owen.

We wanted our last day in Port Washington to be special, so for the past month we have been planning to have a donut sundae at Frankie’s Ice Cream. Frankie’s is an ice cream shop in an old Airstream smack dab in the middle of the main drag in Port. They have all different kinds of Cedar Crest ice cream, and they make itty bitty donuts, too. Not donut holes, just tiny donuts. A donut sundae comes with 6 donuts, two scoops of ice cream, toppings, sauce, and whipped cream.

We got most of our work done this afternoon before a storm came to town. The power flickered, the internet went out (worse than the power, really), and the rain came pouring down. Frankie’s, as an ice cream store that is really a shiny metal box, closed for the safety of its employees. Of course, this is totally reasonable. But also very sad.

Our evening ended differently with salted caramel cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake at the Pasta Shoppe, but the message is clear: eat the donut sundae NOW.

The very closed Frankie’s Ice Cream.
