Clarksville to Green Turtle Bay: Cruising with the Current

We got up early to get a 0700 start on the 94 mile trip from Clarksville to Green Turtle Bay resort. There was a dense fog on the water, so we went back to bed for a little while. By 0800, the fog was mostly clear, so we set out. Clarksville was good to us, but it was time to get some more water under our keel.

As we got out onto the Cumberland and pointed our bow downstream, we were quickly notified by Mother Nature that she was not done playing with the fog. As we went through several banks of dense fog, we turned on the light, blared the horn, and Wendy took watch on the bow peering into the inner-bowels of a ground cloud waiting for her chance to scream, “ICEBERG! STRAIGHT AHEAD!” Fortunately, there are very few icebergs on the Cumberland in September. By 0830 or so, the fog had all cleared out and we were welcomed by a beautifully calm ride.

Cruising was smooth. The current was with us and traffic was light with a few fishermen and the occasional tow. By the time we got to Barkley Lake, we passed a few Loopers headed upstream.

When we got to Green Turtle Bay, we gave them a call and they put us in the same slip as when we left. This time, however, the marina was FULL of Loopers. There were many, many other Loopers in port and it was fun to walk up and down the dock and look at how everyone else set up their boats.

On the second night, we enjoyed our first Docktails! We met some other Loopers and exchanged boat cards. The group ran the gamut from people who were just about to start the Loop to people who had already crossed their wake. It was fun to hear the stories and plans. We hope to see some of the same folks at Joe Wheeler next month!

Loopers!

  1. The sky looks so blue and what a nice looking group of Loopers. It is wonderful being able to remotely travel with you and share in your dream.
    Safe sailing!
