Exploring Mobile

Thanks to the confluence of getting a little work done on Our Dash, weather, work, and the Thanksgiving Holiday, we are hunkered down in Dog River for longer than we had originally hoped. On the bright side, we were not about to let the opportunity to explore go to waste.

With Veterans Day on our minds, we decided to spend the day visiting the Mighty “A” and surrounding attractions. We grabbed an Uber from the marina to the park and ended up spending half the day there. If you have a spare few hours, I highly recommend taking the time to visit. It is an immersive experience where you can really feel and experience what it must have been like. It also offers the opportunity to go into one of the 16-inch turrets and see the inner workings of these massive guns. I had the lingering thought that the ship was cooped up… everything about her was built to move and fight.

After walking through the entire park and paying our respects at the well-done memorials, we grabbed another Uber to Dauphin Street for a late lunch at T.P. Crockmiers. Miss Alabama was there for a party in a red sequin dress, crown, and sash. At least, I think it was her. It could have been a usurper. I don’t think anyone was checking IDs.

After lunch, we explored the neighborhood for a while before ending up at Bienville Park where we learned that the thing to do is feed the squirrels. A kind passerby gave us a few acorns so that we could participate in this time-honored tradition.

We got a final Uber back to the marina to enjoy the sunset before settling in for the night.

  1. I don’t recommend feeding the squirrels, although it does look like a fun experience. My closest encounter with a squirrel was on my college campus, where the squirrels were quite accustomed to getting fed. One day I had a noisy wrapper in my pocket and a squirrel apparently felt I was holding out on him. The thing literally ran up my leg and torso to my shoulder, where he lingered a moment. As we both let out a primal scream, he leapt to the ground and ran a safe distance. No more wrappers in my pockets!
